Just recently I returned from my weekend trip to New Mexico where I got to enjoy several types of Green Chili dishes and see one of the planet’s great natural wonders. White Sand National Monument has been on my list to visit and seeing how this place is only a few hours away from Phoenix I had to make the trip out there before the weather gets too hot.
White Sands NM contains the largest gypsum dune field in the world with over 275 square miles of dunes. At $5 per person, you will gain access to this amazing landscape where one can get lost in different trails or go sledding. It’s important to know that if you plan on visiting to make sure you check the park’s calendar as a nearby military base runs missile testing from time to time. If you stumble upon any suspicious objects, it’s advised you do not touch it.
Although enjoying the views during day time is nice, you also don’t want to miss out on catching the Sunrise or Sunset. As most photographers know this, one can create some awesome images of the landscape. Luckily the park is big enough to where you don’t have to worry about a person getting in the way of your shot. There are plenty of tall dunes to hike to and set up your camera gear. Once you find your favorite dune/dunes to conquer then you can wait for the sky to change colors and take your pics. If you’re looking for some selfies it helps to bring some vibrant colored clothing pieces to display contrast in your photos.
While researching food recommendations for this trip I came to the conclusion that New Mexico does not play around when it comes down to Green Chili. I mean they got Green Chili pizza, Green Chili ranch, and even Green Chili shakes?! “Come again?” Yes you heard correct, Green Chili shakes playboi. If you know me then you know that I’m all about Team Green Chili over Red Chili. So for this adventure I tried everything from the Chile Relleno, Enchilada, Pizza, and the cheeseburger with that special ingredient. Upon trying all of these foods, I confirmed my belief in the hype and can attest that the Green Chili from this state is phenomenal.
From Las Cruces, White Sands, to Hatch I was able to do a lot within a 48 hour time frame. I think people often forget or don’t realize that New Mexico has so many exciting features that deserves the attention as other states do. I will likely return one day in hopes of catching the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, exploring Carlsbad Caverns National Park, more food tastings, and visiting other historic sites.
